Discover The Stunning Island of Santorini

The island of Santorini, the jewel of the Aegean is arguably the most beautiful and iconic of all the Greek islands. This volcanic island with its rugged cliffs and whitewashed houses is truly magnificent. Being able to witness a sunset here is an experience that will remain with you for life.

The best way to discover Santorini is on foot. The walk from Thira to Oia along the caldera is undoubtedly one of the most amazingly beautiful walks I have ever had in Greece and I was fortunate enough to spend nine years living in this beautiful country.  It should take about 3 to 4 hours to complete as you’ll want to keep stopping along the way to soak up the spectacular views and take the obligatory photographs.

The path is well marked and will lead you through towns and along the edge of  the caldera.  Apart from the breathtaking scenery along the way, one of the nicest things about a hike like this in Santorini is that it gives you a chance to explore and enjoy the island in peace.

There are so many places to go sightseeing here but one which is worthy of a  visit is the village of Megalochori. At its centre lies a little square which is popular with locals and where you will find taverns and a good shady spot to sit and enjoy a coffee. From there you will discover a maze of winding, cobbled streets with traditional old houses

The first time I ever visited Santorini was in the month of April to coincide with the Greek Orthodox Easter and it was magical. If you’ve ever experienced Greek Easter celebrations you’ll know how wonderful they can be with all the processions, candles and deeply rooted traditions which are so fascinating to the outsider.

Generally the spring months or late summer ie September are probably the best times to visit. If you do visit in the spring be aware that the evenings can be quite cool. Santorini can be quite a windy island. Arriving late summer is good for swimming as the sea has had all season to warm up.

The beaches of Santorini are as unique as the island itself because of their volcanic origin. Red beach is a prime example and the most famous of the island’s beaches. The volcanic lava red rocks, pebbles and red sand all combine to make this a beach like no other.  It is located very near the ancient site of Akrotiri. Beautiful as it is this beach is also small and can get very crowded during the sumer months.

Ten kilometres southeast of Thira, the island’s capital lies Kamari beach. This striking, long stretch of  beach is covered by black sand and lies under the impressive mountain of Mesa Vouno. This beach offers a good range of facilities such as loungers, umbrellas and water sports. Other facilities on offer at Kamari include cafes, bars, restaurants, shops and a very lively night life. If you’re looking for something a little quieter, Cape Columbo is one of the most isolated beaches. It is situated 10 km away from Thira and is considered by many to be the most beautiful of Santorini’s beaches. It is an unspoiled long, black sandy beach with pebbles.
